The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction released an interim report titled, “Collapse of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces: An Assessment of the Factors That Led to Its Demise.” Among several factors, the report’s findings note that the largest factor in the collapse of Afghan security forces “was the U.S. decision to withdraw military forces and contractors from Afghanistan through the signing of the U.S.-Taliban agreement in February 2020 under the Trump administration, followed by President Biden’s withdrawal announcement in April 2021.” The report pinpoints the U.S.-Taliban aAgreement as setting “in motion a series of events crucial to understanding the [Afghan security forces’] collapse.” You can read the report here and below.
